Scrollane — Windows-style middle-click scrolling for your Mac

Click the middle mouse button once, then move the mouse to scroll. Click again to stop. If you came to Mac from Windows and miss this, that's the whole app.

Download for macOS Free. No account, no credit card.

Requires a mouse with a middle button. It does not work with trackpads or the Magic Mouse.

What it does

What it doesn't do

I'd rather you know the limits before you download it, so here they are plainly.

How it works

  1. Install and open. Drag Scrollane to your Applications folder and launch it. It lives in the menu bar, not the Dock.
  2. Grant Accessibility once. A short illustrated guide opens the right System Settings page and shows you exactly what to toggle. It's the standard macOS permission every mouse tool needs.
  3. Middle-click and go. Click the middle button in any app and start scrolling. That's it. The menu-bar icon lets you turn it on or off, launch at login, or quit.

Download

Free.

No payment, no sign-up, no time limit.

Privacy & security

"Isn't a tool that watches my mouse basically a keylogger?" It's a fair question, so here's exactly what Scrollane does and doesn't touch.

More detail is in the Privacy Policy.

FAQ

Do I really need a mouse with a middle button?

Yes. This is the one thing the app can't work around. Most scroll-wheel mice have a clickable wheel, which counts as the middle button. Trackpads and the Magic Mouse don't have one.

What is the Accessibility permission for?

macOS won't let any app read mouse-button clicks system-wide without it. Every tool of this kind needs it. Scrollane uses it only to see the middle button and Esc, and it can't do anything until you grant it.

How many Macs can I install it on?

As many as you like. It's free, and there is no license key to enter.

Scrolling stopped after a macOS or app update. What now?

An update can reset the Accessibility permission. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and turn Scrollane back on.

How do I uninstall it?

Quit it from the menu bar, then drag Scrollane out of your Applications folder to the Trash. You can also remove it from the Accessibility list in System Settings.
